Five Miles

On Saturday my husband and I woke up at 6AM so that we could make it to the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" awareness walk. It started at Cottonwood Mall and went along the Rio Grande for five miles. I must say, I am sooooo out of shape. Please God help me to get back in shape.

It was a great turn out. If I had to guess there was about 30,000 people. LARGE crowd. It was great to see all the supporters. While this walk was for good intentions it was not just for breast cancer. It is sponsored by the American Cancer Society, and the money raised goes to cure all types of cancer.

Not counting some kinds of skin cancer, breast cancer in the United States is the most common cancer in women, no matter your race or ethnicity. It is also the most common cause of death from cancer among Hispanic women and the second most common cause of death from cancer among white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. In 2005 (the most recent year numbers are available) 186,467 women and 1,764 men developed breast cancer and 41,116 women and 375 men died from breast cancer. YES, I DID SAY MEN...Men can also get breast cancer. In men, breast cancer can happen at any age, but is most common in men who are between 60 and 70 years old. Male breast cancer is not very common. For every 100 cases of breast cancer, less than 1 is in men.

Thank you to all who donated to this great cause and supported me on this walk.

Liam did REALLY well in his stroller!
